Shure SE310
Choosing a pair of high quality earphones requires some tough decision making because they are quite pricey and delicate. The high price must always be backed up with quality construction for long term usage and should be equally comfortable for frequent users. Those that have portable media players or stereo equipment will also expect higher costing earphones to have much better sound quality than the earbuds that the player comes with. Some of the earphones that cost over $100 fail to meet expectations in terms of bass sound quality. Others may even lack any noise cancelation features needed for the music’s full quality to be enjoyed. The Shure SE310 Sound Isolating Earphone aims to provide all of these features while having a nice form factor.
Design and Comfort
The Shure SE310 Sound Isolating Earphone has a sleek industrial design that looks different from every other product in the Shure series including the higher-end models. It also comes in white and black designs like most other models. The Flex sound isolating sleeves that are included promise to add a whole new level of comfort and ambient noise blocking at the same. In addition, the included Deluxe Fit Kit contains three sizes of these Flex sleeves. Three additional sizes that are made of Foam are also included for added comfort customization.
No matter what sleeve is used, the Shure SE310 Sound Isolating Earphone can be worn in three different ways where the cord can go over the ear in front or over the ear in back. Casual listeners may find the traditional straight down to be the best. However, a proper fit is necessary in getting the best sound quality and isolation possible. A manual is included that helps first-time users in wearing the earphones properly. After some practice, the SE310 should be very comfortable and the foam pieces take a while to go back to shape which is great for repetitive usage.
The Deluxe Fit Kit includes more than just sleeves in the package. One of the unique accessories is the modular cable that can extend the cable length by 3 feet. That totals 4.5 feet of cable length which is a bit longer than other earphones. There is a nice carrying case that is durable and compact enough to carry the Shure SE310 Sound Isolating Earphone with no tangles.
“I did a lot of research leading up to my purchase of the Shure SE310′s. I had high hopes when I listened to them for the first time. But they seemed to be lacking in the bass department. Other than that they had really clean audio and sounded spectacular. Upon researching why they lacked bass, I discovered many peoples’ claim of a break in period before the earbuds got loosened up and provided more bass. And over time I have noticed this to be true to a certain extent. I had an old pair of $40 Sony sound isolating earbuds which had a ton of bass, and when I first listened to the Shure’s I thought they sounded weak, but now after listening to the SE310′s for about a month, I can say they definitely sound better than the Sony’s. Though the cheaper Sony’s have a little more bass, it sounds boomy and tends to cover over the detail of other instruments, whereas the Shure’s are crystal clear and the bass is very defined. One of the best things about the SE310′s is their ability to block out external sound. I’m a college student and at one of our basketball games I decided to take my earbuds and see how well they blocked out sound. It was just before the game with the entire gymnasium going nuts and the band playing very loudly. I put the earbuds in and I could still comfortably listen at the levels I normally listen to, which isn’t very loud by any means (I value my hearing. I have my Creative Zen Vision:M volume at 10 out of 25). They also work great when I’m trying to get work done and lots of things are going on around me. Very often I can be in my room with these things in my ears and people will come in and talk to me and I won’t hear them at all. That’s how good they work. Obviously it is very important that you find the right earpieces that give a good seal in your ear. I would recommend these to anyone who wants very high audio clarity. Though I would prefer a little bit more bass at lower volumes, when you turn them up they really produce. And I can’t complain too much because they are meant to have a flat frequency response, so your best bet is to raise your EQ’s lower frequencies a little bit and turn on the bass boost (assuming your mp3 player or sound source has these options). They come with a semi-hard zipper case to store them in as well as multiple sets of ear pieces and a wax cleaning tool. They are well worth the price tag, and I would gladly recommend them to anyone. – S.Moultroup (VT, USA)
Features
The SE310 is a couple steps ahead of the SE210 which costs around $50 less. The extra investment is more than worth it if the primary need is bass quality since it features a Tuned BassPort which complements the Hi-Definition MicroSpeaker to get all possible details for any music that it is being played. The Hi-Definition MicroSpeaker alone performs very well utilizing a single balanced armature to extend the audio range and provide additional sound clarity. It falls slightly short of the studio quality standards, but it still performs much better than earbuds and it still weighs a little more than a pound making it great for bringing premium audio on the go.
The Shure SE310 Sound Isolating Earphone does a fantastic job in isolating at least 90% of the ambient noise which is far more impressive than the headphones that rely on noise cancelling. Once a proper fit is secured, the sound quality of any track coming from any genre should be good and the added bass response can make a difference for hip hop tracks and other songs that produce lots of bass. All other features of the SE310 are the same as the SE210.
Bottom Line
The Shure SE310 Sound Isolating Earphone used to be very expensive because of the high quality sound features, but now a pair should cost around $150. The design certainly has that premium look that stands out yet should match nicely with any black or white portable media device or home stereo. The added extras also make this more of a great deal. Putting these earphones on takes some minor practicing, but it can be very rewarding once the tracks that have a lot of emphasis on bass kick in. This is a recommended pair of earphones for people that need total focus in their music without sacrificing comfort.
Actual User Reviews:
• “I purchased these for use with my Apple Macbook Pro laptop. I will say in one word – AMAZING!These noise isolation earplugs – ISOLATE. They seem as effective as the foam earplugs I used to wear at a large manufacturing facility where I worked. I mean they seal up TIGHT and cut HUGE decibels of outside noise. As far as sound – there seems to be any number of “Audiophiles” in this world – each with their own opions of all earphones – past, present, and future. I am not an “Audiophile”. I am a geek – a computer user – who enjoys listening to MP3′s, or perhaps something from iTunes. I might decide to watch a DVD movie, or play (HORRORS!) a computer game. Do you know what? These ear phones are MOST EXCELLENT for any or all of these things. Treble is clear and crisp – rings like a bell. Bass is deep and vibrant. At 1/2 volume on my Macbook Pro – I could FEEL the sound literally in my bones, all the way to my feet. People who have said you need a 2 or 3 driver earphone to deliver good Bass response are out of their minds! These sound better than the 12 inch Cerwin Vegas I have hooked up to my Mitsubishi big screen – in terms of Bass response. I would dare say you would have to have at least a $2000 set of home stereo speakers to equal the sound output and quality of these inexpensive headphones. They are THAT GOOD. If you want to pay more for earphones – by all means do so. If you have some type of hyper sonic hearing and are playing with uber-super- duper sampled audio – and wish to hear the fly landing on the left cymbal during William Tells overture – perhaps something MAYBE will deliver SLIGHTLY more response for you delicate audio orifice. But for the rest of us – who listen to MP3 – watch DVD movies – and play games – THESE ARE ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING. I mean they are MAC DADDY – MONSTER – ear phones. I have NO COMPLAINTS whatsoever. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!” – C.Suddreth (AZ, USA)
