Shure SE210
A standard pair of headphones or earbuds will most certainly keep casual listeners happy if they want to just groove to their favorite tunes on their portable device. However, pairs of earphones that can cost many times as much have a few benefits that those that often use the earphones will like. Some earphones are more comfortable to wear for prolonged listening while others are able to reproduce better audio quality and enable sound isolation to get the best listening experience. That money isn’t just spent on the earphones themselves, but an entire package is included to make the pair more valuable. The Shure SE210 Sound Isolating Earphone keeps offers all of these features while making sure the price isn’t too high compared to the other models available.
Design and Comfort
One interesting thing about the different Shure models is that they all feature their own unique design. The SE210 comes in black and white designs and has a trendy curvy look. These earphones can pair nicely with any high-end portable gadget or home stereo system. It is also very lightweight and ergonomic making it a great pair of earphones to wear on the go too. Those that are used to earbuds will realize that these earphones aren’t the type to just put on immediately.
Although it requires some practice to put these earphones on, the instruction manual it comes with provides detailed instructions. It also shows three different ways to wear the earphones for maximum comfort.
The Shure SE210 includes a package called the Deluxe Fit Kit that has sound isolating sleeves. These sleeves come in small, medium and large sizes which are soft and provide great noise isolation. There are also three pairs of foam sleeves that serve as an alternative to creating a tight seal for good sound quality and comfort. These foams possess a unique characteristic where they are very easy to compress, but take awhile to get back into shape which is very ideal for forming the perfect seal.
The cable may seem shorter at first glance measuring just 18 inches long, but the modular cable that is also included in the Deluxe Fit Kit extends the cable length by 3 feet for great possibilities on the go. While this kind of setup isn’t the most durable, people can now carry their favorite device in their pocket or armband without any major restrictions. Also included is a compact and durable carrying case for safe storage. The earphones can be placed inside without worrying about tangling the cord.
“Since purchasing my 80g video iPod 7 months ago I have gone through 5 sets of headphones in my search for the perfect sound quality. I have at last found it in the SE210 earbuds from Shure. In a side to side comparison between the BOSE ear buds and the 210s I was at first blown away by the bass excellence of the BOSE but soon I came to realize that the overall effect, in spite of the excellent bass, was a slightly muddled performance. The 210s seem to isolate each vocal and instrumental performance. The total effect is one of clarity and distinctness. No muddled or fuzzy sounds here. Actually, having a more subtle bass enhances the rest of the levels. The sleeves are simply the best out there period. In the kit they provide, you can find a perfect fit for your ears. I am partial to the soft foam sleeves as they resemble ear plugs and are quite malleable. I agree with other reviewers on the shortness of the cord but the extension is so easy to use that it becomes a non-issue for me. I consider myself something of an audiophile and can tell you that the 210s really deliver the goods. “ – M.Ellsworth (AZ, USA)
Features
The features aren’t much compared to the higher-end models, but Shure SE210 effectively balances features, performance and price with the main highlight being the Hi-Definition MicroSpeaker housed in each earpiece. It is only powered by the basic single balanced armature driver, but that is still very good when pitted against traditional earbuds. It is still possible to get a very lively listening experience that can be compared to a real live performance. Extra detail can be noticed with tracks of various genres with some bright highs and greater clarity.
Sound Isolation Technology is the second major feature that outperforms competing headphones that rely on noise-cancelling. There are no batteries required or added hiss to affect the listening experience. Being a low-end model, the Shure SE210 is a bit light in the bass which can be fine for those that are not heavily into hip hop. Rock and alternative music sound fine, but other models still perform a bit better.
Bottom Line
Despite some very minor shortcomings, the price tag remains attractive where some online vendors may be already selling it for just under $100. This is fantastic for a pair of earphones that have a nice 25 Hz – 18.5 kHz range and some of the extra accessories thrown in make this a great package for music enthusiasts. All of the quality and comfort is ensured as long as the Shure SE210 is worn correctly as indicated in the instruction manual. It must be placed very deep into the ear canal to get the full experience of noise isolation and rich Hi-Definition sounds.
Actual User Reviews:
• “For comfort & general isolation: these are surprisingly good. After trying many of the included earbuds, I liked the default ones best. The isolation is nearly complete – it’s now much easier to ignore nearby conversations, oncoming traffic, and street thugs. The earbuds can be inserted loosely, iPod style if you don’t want the isolation, but if you want isolation while you’re walking, you’ll probably have to wear them with each cord up-and-over the ear to prevent your listening experience being overwhelmed by the sounds of the cord stresses with each step (imagine tapping on a stethoscope). note to audiophagophiles: these will let you fully appreciate the sounds of chewing your food and gum. – N.Vennam (NY, USA)
• “Another good thing is the sound isolation, which is quite good. These earphones fit into the ears like a set of earplugs, and when they are in place they give a similar level of sound isolation. Even when there is no sound coming through the earphones, isolation of ambient noise is good, and only loud low frequencies come through at all (so, for example, you would hear someone knocking on the door). And when there is sound coming through the earphones, all outside sound is masked completely. – Phil. (Oregon, USA)
