Sennheiser MX 980

One of the commonly used peripherals that have not changed all that much until recently is earphones. Adapting to the wireless age, manufacturers are now making earphones smaller and powering them with Bluetooth and other wireless technologies so people can carry their portable devices with them and start listening to their favorite tracks comfortably without delay.

However, these wireless devices have not necessarily killed the older wired style earphones because there are a lot of people out there that find these revolutionary earphones too expensive and would rather spend the money on something that is focused more on audio quality and design. This is where Sennheiser plans to make a bold statement as they released their new Expression Line earphones earlier this year. The new 980 series comes in the CX, MX, and OMX models with the Sennheiser MX 980 being the simplest of the three.

Design and Comfort

However, the Sennheiser MX 980 is not the average earphones that are still being sold these days. In fact, Sennheiser added some really interesting design features to make this pair of earphones really shine from the rest. Even for people that are not looking for the best designing earphones, the MX 980 is made to be more comfortable than standard earphones as well.

The Sennheiser MX 980 earphones are shiny and durable utilizing metal-crafted parts. Upon close inspection, the serial number is laser-engraved on the left alloy. The aluminum alloy hosts a fairly large black speaker housing made of plastic. While these headphones do not include any ordinary ear adapter or foam ear adapter sets, the Sennheiser MX 980does include a pair of ear pads to provide some comfort.

The cable length is around 1.2 meters symmetrical with each side of the earphone wire runs towards the splitter. This cable also ends up with a very unique 3.5 mm plug where it has the benefits of the two general types being the straight and angled plugs. This rotatable jack is finished with the same material alloy that is used on the earphones. The design of the integrated volume control also looks professionally made.

Several accessories also complement the MX 980 including a cable clip for better cable management, an inflight adapter with a 3.5 mm double mono jack, and a carrying case which safely holds the earphones and serves as a cable winder too. All of the accessories match nicely with the design of the Sennheiser MX 980. For the style alone, the MX 980 is a great buy and stands out nicely from the rest of the models including Sennheiser’s older models.

Features

Sennheiser delivers its promise for balanced sound quality with added precision. While this pair of earphones isn’t ideal to use as in-ear monitors, the sound quality towers above just about all of the other non-IEM earphones out there.

The quality sound experience gives credit to the dynamic speaker system embedded in each ear bud. For the nice balance effect, powerful neodymium magnets are used. Although there is no way to tweak the bass as much as the CX 980, the Sennheiser MX 980 delivers a slightly higher 120 dB specification. It is still possible to get some extended bass with the right fit and the soundstage is still pretty wide with some smooth mids. These qualities make the pair very good for listening music coming out of the iPod, other new portable devices, and even laptops. For better control, the volume is easily adjustable with integrated volume control.

Bottom Line

Compared to the CX 980 and the OMX 980, the Sennheiser MX 980 has the fewest bells and whistles, but still manages to offer its key unique features that justify the $200 price tag. The MX 980 undoubtedly looks great and they are really made to last. All that is required to feel the best sound experience as advertised is to fit the earphones properly and use them while playing high quality mp3 formats. Casual listeners and people who have very large mp3 collections in their portable player should enjoy all their music with this pair while audiophiles might want to go for the multi-driver headphones.

• “I’m just a regular listener , so I don’t think I can say much about sound details.

However, I’m sure that any non-audiophile will hear the differences between their normal headphones and this one (I have AKG K420, iFrogz CS40s, and very cheap Sony MDR-E818). I heard more details I’ve never heard before from the same songs, and I felt that some instruments were further away from my head (it’s just feel a bit more 3D to me).
I also noticed some differences between low and high quality files while using this earbud–normal people might’ve already been able to do this with normal headphones, but my ears is not that good.

The only thing that bothers me is the size of the earbud, it’s larger than normal earbuds (e.g. the Apple white earbud). I’m not sure if I have small ears or not, but the earbud doesn’t fit me very well and fell out of my ears easily. The fit is very crucial when using earbuds, the sound can be different if it doesn’t fit well. So just make sure you try this thing before you buy it.
Also, the sound is much better when I put the foam ear pads on. So the earbud will be even bigger and you should take that into account when buying the MX980.

I would have given 5 stars if the earbud fits my ears nicely (it would be perfect).
