Design and Comfort
One of the surprising facts about the Sennheiser CX 880 is how elegant the earphones are. The Sennheiser CX 880 falls under the category of ear canal earphones. Unlike standard ear canal earphones, the CX 880 has a professional touch with metallic hairlines and chrome plated parts. These design specs make the earphones very durable as well. The Expression Line has a lot more style, but the CX 880 remains as a sophisticated classic and will always be viewed as a pair that has more depth in style than others.
The silicon ear adapters are what make the CX 880 earphones comfortable for all kinds of listeners. Compared to older models in the Classic Line, the volume control of the CX 880 has been redesigned to have a horizontal rotary knob for easier usability even if the connected portable device is placed in the pocket.
It also comes with a number of accessories in addition to the ear adapter set. The package also includes a storage pouch for safe handling of the ergonomic earphones. The storage pouch also has a feature that winds the cable with ease. The cable’s length is around 1.2 m symmetrical, but it comes with a cable clip for easier management when wearing the earphones. The included cleaning tool allows users to take good care of their valuable earphones.
Features
The diaphragm guards are one of the main highlights of the Sennheiser CX 880 because it does more than just provide some comfort. These guards significantly enhance the audio performance and it works with other features to boost the sound quality even further. The Sennheiser earphones that are used for monitoring purposes are still noticeably better in terms of sound quality, but the Sennheiser does claim that the earphones feature highly advanced acoustic systems without distracting the user.
The silicon ear adapters also contribute to the sound performance since they bring the high passive attenuation of ambient noise experience. iPod and iPhone users that are not contented with the earphones that they come with will welcome the Sennheiser CX 880 earphones since the hardware features make just about all kinds of music sound exceptional as long as the music or samples have a good bit rate. This does not mean that the Sennheiser CX 880 does not work with other portable devices. Since it uses a 3.5mm angled plug, other devices that have these outputs can be used with the CX 880 too. Some devices include laptops, mobile phones, and even certain GPS models.
Bottom Line
Many Sennheiser models are continuing to do well in sales because people are willing to spend more for the extras. However, the Sennheiser CX 880 surprisingly costs under $200. The 115 dB and 17 – 23,000 Hz specifications also reflect the high-quality sound. Compared to the very cheap earphones, the difference in sound quality will impress ordinary listeners and some audiophiles alike. There is no real emphasis on bass features, but all kinds of genres should sound fine and the professional design should let these earphones last several years until a newer pair needs to be purchased. The accessories that it comes with also make this package worth the money especially if the portable device emphasizes on good audio quality.
Actual User Reviews:
• “I received a pair of these directly from Sennheiser after sending a pair of CX400s for some rather severe microphonics issues. While these do still have microphonics issues, it’s much less noticeable and isn’t deafening when they get bumped. It’s also mostly only noticeable when the cord splits for the two buds. I’ll cover cost later on.
Comfort
I’ve been wearing these for around two hours now and barely notice them. The silicone earbuds are soft and very comfortable.
Sound Quality
Sound quality will vary for people with each person’s choice in music and earbud fit, but this here’s my take on things. I love that these headphones provide balanced sound, because I listen to a wide variety of music, which artificially bass heavy headphones will ruin. They provide clear sound across the range of highs and lows and seem to have a good sound stage.
Sound Isolation
These seem to provide slightly more isolation than the CX400s did for me. If foam earbuds were included, that would greatly help with the isolation. If people want better sound isolation, they should look for triple flange ear tips, which are common on models from Etymotic and some others.
More on Microphonics
I could see these being a bit distracting to exercise in, because the microphonics become more pronounced when anything comes into contact with the buds themselves. Wise use of the included clip takes care of most, if not all, of the microphonics from the cord for me.
Cost/Accessories
Because I received these within the warranty period for the CX400s, I can’t quite as accurately gauge if they’re worth it. As a base for the earbuds alone, I would, being a fairly cheap person, probably be willing to spend around $50-$70 on them.
What easily makes them more worthwhile is the solid construction, a two year warranty, and excellent customer service, volume control, and the accessories. The earwax cleaner isn’t particularly expensive, but it’s handy. The well-designed hard leather case makes a difference; it’s not an overly bulky cheap plastic case. It’s designed for the cord to be wrapped around then covered.
I think that I’ve gone on long enough… anyway, I love these.” – PC (USA)
