Etymotic ety8
The portable gadgets that were selling heavily in the past decade and the portable gadgets introduced in recent years have one thing in common which is the same 3.5mm jack. Still, the quality of both the earphones and gadgets themselves need to be improved especially with the introduction of high definition to get a chance to hear music in their best studio-like quality and vocals at clearer levels. This has evolved even further with the introduction of iPods, with the latest generation models having a 30-pin connector to allow several self-powered accessories to be plugged in.
Etymotic Research took advantage of this attribute to make the Etymotic Research Ety8 Bluetooth Stereo Wireless In-Ear Earphones to allow listeners to combine the exceptional sound quality of other Etymotic Research earphones with wireless freedom.
Design and Comfort
The Etymotic Research Ety8 includes several components, including the same pair of lightweight earphones that use 3-flanged eartips so listeners can enjoy noise isolation without sacrificing comfort. There are also other types of eartips to suit other users as well as comfortable foam eartips for those that prefer those. The fitting of the wireless earpieces may take some practice since they need to be placed a bit deeper in the ear for the best audio quality, but earpieces end up being very light and do not feel very different from traditional earpieces. It separates itself from the other wireless earphones by not having them sit on top of the ears. For devices that support AVRCP, including the latest iPods that do not run iPhone OS, the small controls on one of the wireless earpieces can be used to mimic the standard functions found on the player itself.
Like the ER4, the Etymotic Research Ety8 is actually a full package that includes a leather case to fit all the eartips along with a filter changing tool and some filters. There is also a USB charging cable to charge the wireless components. iPod users should get the Ety8 with the iPod system that includes the 8-Mate adapter which serves as a transceiver. These earphones aren’t stylish enough for listening in some areas, but they do the job nicely in comfort.
“I used to have a pair of AKG reference headphones (older model of this AKG K240) for the studio and missed the quality of the sound. Flat, but responsive. Good for mixing.
ety8 sound: I wanted something that sounded similar in quality, if not tone. The ety8′s brought new meaning to tunes I listen to. Lots of spacial awareness I had missed before. Zeppelin is, yet again, a new experience.
Bluetooth: Paired it with a Mac Pro. Sounds great. Paired it with a Lenovo laptop sounds great. Paired it with a Logitech transmitter Logitech FreePulse Wireless Headphones for the iTouch sounded good but dropped connection outside if I put the iPod in any pocket. I was under the impression that ety’s transmitter would work with an iTouch, but it doesn’t. It doesn’t matter to me though. They sound too good to switch to another brand. One thing about the volume controls on the right earbud is that it’s easier to use your right thumb to push the buttons (with your index finger used to grasp the unit). Works perfect that way.”

The Ety8 uses the technology of Bluetooth to get rid of the cables completely, allowing music to be enjoyed with maximum comfort. With the 8-Mate adapter plugged in, iPod users can enjoy music with perfect clarity even if they are around 30 feet away from their iPods. This comes at the price of reduced battery life depending on the iPod model since the entire system doesn’t make use of its own batteries. Fortunately, their light weight make up for this. Other Bluetooth-enabled devices including cellular phones can enjoy the same wireless experience as well.
The sound quality doesn’t fail to impress either, meeting the standards of the ER4. This means noise isolation at its best along with stellar audio quality. It is nearly impossible to tell the difference between listening wirelessly and listening using other wired Etymotic Research products. This quality is best achieved with the portable player in the right armband or pocket since the Bluetooth receiver is located in the right earbud where the controls are located. Music coming from all genres can be enjoyed even at lower volume levels even though there is some drop in the bass quality.
Bottom Line
The Etymotic Research Ety8 Bluetooth Stereo Wireless In-Ear Earphones are a bit expensive, having nearly twice the price of wired Etymotic Research headphones of the same sound quality. However, out of all the other Bluetooth earphones, the Ety8 earphones sound the best and are very comfortable despite the lack in style. It is also important to note that non-iPod owners can get a slightly cheaper set that doesn’t include the iPod adapter. They can even pair better with the Bluetooth phones since most of the Bluetooth headsets are mono. The noise cancellation features cannot be matched by any of the Bluetooth headsets either. Going outdoors with these earphones may still be possible since they can be safely stored in the leather carrying case that it comes with.
Actual User Reviews:
• “I just auditioned these at Macworld and they sound great. Same hi quality sound as the ER4 but no cord. They are also very light so you feel nothing pulling your ears down at all. As for the comment about what you might look like wearing these headphones, who cares. You enter you own world of hi-fidelity with the sounds of the outside world gone. Thus only where these where you will be safe not hearing the outside world because you will not. Enjoy!” – J.A.Davy (CA,USA)
• “Up front, I have to say, if you have no patience, don’t get these. But if you’re willing to give yourself a little bit of a curve to get used to them, they are worth every penny. You’ll never give them up.
I’ve played music all my life, and sound fidelity is important to me. When I first got the ETY 8 earphones as a gift, the form almost overcame the function for me. It took some getting used to the in-ear placement of the earphones – you really have to get them placed deeply into your ear, which felt odd at first, and took some practice to be able to do quickly. Then, there was the sort of odd feel of the two pieces hanging off my ears. Plus, they look a little bit odd. OK, so I got over the oddness. The earphones are actually very light, and once you get used to the feel, you forget they’re there. Because they’d been a gift, I kind of felt obligated to use them, so I powered thru the initial getting-used-to it period, and then I started to understand what these earphones are all about.
It’s about real sound. Not over-cranked, duded-up bass, but real high fidelity sound. From a wireless earphone, which I didn’t expect. I don’t know of another pair of earphones that reproduces the original artists’ sound with so faithfully. No kidding. It’s really different than the deep pulsing bass you get with Bose and many other earphones on the market. You hear the individual instruments, and the color of the sound. And the noise isolation function of this type of in-ear insertion is superior. I can be riding the Muni bus downtown and be in a world of my own. Even on an airplane, the sense of uninterrupted sound clarity is flat out awesome.
If you like driving around in a car with your radio blaring and your bass shaking the drivers around you, these are not the right earphones for you. But if you are a seeker of true high fidelity sound, go for them.” – A.Simmons (CA,USA)
• I just bought these ety8′s and the sound quality is amazing. I’ve owned a lot of blue tooth head sets and have never been happy….until now…WOW!!” – J.Brennan (NY,USA)
