The catchiest tunes sound absolutely great on higher volumes providing that the song quality and sound system is decent.  However, if the speakers fall short in build quality, the entire experience can be ruined.  This goes the same with headphones and earphones that have average quality.  Those that purchase portable media devices like iPods may be satisfied with the quality that the earbuds deliver, but they do not realize that the tracks sound a lot better with earphones that can cost 2 or 3 times the price.  People that buy mobile phones that are geared specifically for music playback will even be more disappointed with the earbuds that it comes with.  It is a big difference especially when certain elements of the song can be heard all of a sudden.  The Etymotic ER4B does the job in making sure that sound is fully transmitted to the ears.

Design and Comfort

The Etymotic ER4B MicroPro Binaural In-Ear Earphones not only stands strong in sound quality, but they manage to be very comfortable to wear, thanks to the pair of 3-flanged eartips that are included.  The unique design of these eartips allows them to be deeply inserted to the ear canal to provide maximum noise isolation and much clearer sound.  A special method needs to be followed to get the full sound experience.  If there is any difficulty, 2 more pairs of 3-flanged eartips of different sizes are included for a custom fit.

Other people that are used to the foam eartips can make use of any of the 5 pairs of disposable foam eartips to get their best comfort without sacrificing on the sound quality.  After all 5 pairs are worn out and disposed, the 3-flanged eartips can still be used as long as they are cleaned regularly which is possible by using mild soap mixed with water.

All of the eartips and earphones are packaged in a nice storage box where other accessories can be found including a set of 4 replacement filters and a filter-changing tool.  Using the tool prolongs the life of the Etymotic ER4B earphones by making sure that no earwax and other dirt reaches the sensitive components of the earphones.  Also included is a 5 foot long cord with a 3.5 mm stereo phone plug at the end which can be useful in certain situations when listening on the go.

The sound quality isn’t fully optimized for portable listening, but the inclusion of the 2-inch stereo phone adapter plug expands on the supported devices to get the best quality out of those pieces of equipment.  The shirt clip also helps keep the earphones in place.  When the earphones aren’t in use, they can either be placed back in the storage box or placed inside the compact zippered pouch so people can take the earphones with them.

Features

The letter “B” in ER4B means “Binaural” which makes use of 2 channels for both ears.  This may seem similar to stereo quality, but it is actually different since there is the ER4S model which is more emphasized on stereo quality.  The Etymotic ER4B is the model of choice when it comes to listening to vinyl recordings and CD tracks on a stereo.  It is designed to emulate the open ear listening to the sound in a diffuse sound field.  Any sound tracks that are not optimized for loudspeaker playback sound much better than other models of the ER-4 series.  It is important to know that the Etymotic ER4B was the first model of the series and the unveiling of the other two models was based on the feedback of the ER4P.

However, this doesn’t mean that the sound quality falls short compared to the newer models.  Even when plugged into to portable devices, the sound quality and noise isolation is noticeably better than other under-priced earphones and earbuds that are included with the portable media players.  The only element that the pair of earphones is lacking is the enhanced bass response found only in the ER4P model.

Bottom Line

All of the other features are present in the Etymotic ER4B including the high accuracy which is needed to hear all of the instruments involved in a track.  It may fall a bit short on some genres like hip hop due to the lack of bass, but the professional quality that Etymotic delivers is still present and the eartips remain very comfortable if inserted correctly.

• “I purchased the Etymotic ER-4B’s 3 years ago, and when I received them I worried about the durability of the incredibly thin wires. I use these earphones nearly every day with my iPod Nano, and when I turn off the music I wrap the 4B’s around the Nano and put them in my jacket pocket. Pretty rough treatment. I felt they would break in 60 days…but they are still in terrific shape.

The sound is great and the noise isolation is phenomenal. I use them instead of my Bose noise cancelling headphones as they are much better than the Bose in isolating you from outside noise, they sound better than the Bose and they take up about 1/10 the space.

Sitting in airport gate areas is now a breeze, as I can’t hear the screaming kids or guys yelling on their cell phones. Actually, you can hear a little bit of external sound, but it is at such a low level that it is easy to ignore. They are very light and the only real negative (if you don’t count price) is that it took a couple of listening sessions to get used to these babies stuck deep into my ears.
